The Problem

Industrial 6-DOF manipulators exhibit significant end-effector vibration during high-speed operations. Baseline: ±2.3 mm displacement vs ±0.5 mm target.

"The first bending mode at 12.4 Hz accounted for 68% of total displacement."

Approach

Modal analysis via ANSYS, LQR control design in MATLAB/Simulink, physical validation on scaled prototype. Piezoelectric actuators at joints 3 and 5 based on modal strain energy maps.

[ Figure: 1st bending mode @ 12.4 Hz — ANSYS ]

Results

34% reduction in peak displacement. Settling time 380 ms → 210 ms. Prototype confirmed within 6% margin.

Final: ±0.38 mm · 210 ms settling · within ±0.5 mm target

About
Mattia
Ferdeghini.

I'm a mechanical engineer from Bologna — a city I love for its porticoes, its obsession with food, and its serious engineering tradition.

At UniBo I focused on dynamics, control systems, and mechanical design — problems at the intersection of math and intuition.

Outside the lab: basketball since 12, Emilian cooking, strong opinions on music.

Beyond work

The human side.

What you do outside work says as much about you as what you do in it.

🏀
Basketball

Playing since I was 12. Point guard. The game taught me more about teamwork and decisions under pressure than any course ever did.

🍝
Cooking

Emilian through and through. Cooking is engineering: variables, process, result. You can also eat the prototype.

🎵
Music

Always something on. Ambient for focus, rap for energy, jazz on slow evenings.
